Geometry Summer School
This August sees the second Geometry Summer School held at Dumfries House, in Ayrshire, Scotland, taught by The Prince’s Foundation School of Traditional Arts.
August will see the return of the annual Geometry Summer School held by The Prince’s Foundation School of Traditional Arts at Dumfries House in Ayrshire, Scotland. Taking place between 15 – 19 August, this event includes an array of in-depth lectures, seminars and practical workshops held by an esteemed line up of expert geometry practitioners and tutors. The five-day course will aim to provide positive dialogue, share insights, and exchange practical drawing methods.

Amongst the tutors are Scott Olsen, PhD, Emeritus Professor of Philosophy & Religion at the College of Central Florida and the author of the award-winning international bestseller The Golden Section: Nature’s Greatest Secret; Alan Adams, who upon retiring in 2008 pursued a lifelong interest in understanding the structure of Islamic geometric art; Richard Henry, co-founder of the organisation Art of Islamic Pattern; Katya Nosyreva, PhD – a ceramicist, visual artist, and geometer; Director of Studies for the MA program at The Prince’s Foundation School of Traditional Arts, Simon Trethewey; and Dr Lisa DeLong who completed her doctoral studies at the School in 2007, specialising in the principles of geometric design in Islamic and Western traditions.
“Students will be coming along to an immersive week-long geometry experience. We will be together eating, sleeping, dreaming geometry,” says The Prince’s Foundation School of Traditional Arts Outreach and Harmony Programme Manager, Lisa DeLong. This year’s Summer School will centre around the Golden Ratio, exploring how the simple yet complex proportion inspires contemporary practical design and craft interpretations, through engaging with nature and historical sources.
“By the end of the week, we hope that they will not only understand this proportion but have the keys to begin their own design application. This immersive, residential experience brings together a community of international experts to inspire our participants in their future creativity and research.” Lisa says.
