We are delighted to present the School’s annual Degree Show celebrating the two-year journey of our seven MA graduates and the completed research project of our doctoral student.
Despite challenges from the series of lockdowns during 2021, this year’s graduating students demonstrate their passion, determination and commitment to the traditional arts and crafts, producing some remarkable and wide-ranging examples of work.
From Europe to the Middle East and China, our MA students have explored traditions such as: Indian miniature painting and illumination; medieval stained glass and gold leaf; the sacred feminine and Nature; glass-gilding and the preparation of natural materials from the earth; Persian miniature paintings and the exploration of light and dark; and Islamic geometric patterns and Qur’an illumination.
The PhD project focused on the exemplary work of theologian and iconographer Saint Sophrony the Athonite and his approach to the face and personhood in the Orthodox Tradition to explore potential approaches for cases of strictly necessary new design within Orthodox iconography.
