End of Year Show at The Jameel House of Traditional Arts / Jeddah

Participating artists from the Jameel House of Traditional Arts / Jeddah’s one-year programme are exhibiting two collective masterworks, as well as a wide selection of individual pieces.

The exhibition is on view from May 23 to June 5, 2018.

The programme’s participants have produced a full-size mihrab (prayer niche) and a roshan (traditional wooden window-frame) that draw on the rich heritage of the Old Town (Al-Balad) of Jeddah. The works demonstrate the participants’ skills in crafts and traditional design and the potential of the artists to contribute to restoration projects in the Old Town.

The work on show also reflects the programme’s ethos of creating contemporary design inspired by tradition.

Drawing from the references of Islamic architecture of the old town of Jeddah (Al-Balad), the collaboration among the students resulted in the full-size artwork of the Mihrab, or prayer niche, in ceramics and gypsum. The purpose of this project is to share the Mihrab, commonly found in mosques, within domestic spaces.

Inspired by the heritage of Al-Balad, the artists also collectively designed and made a Roshan façade - a traditional wooden window. They learnt the craft of mangour and ceramics to complete the piece on wood with tiles details. This design brings the tradition of the Roshan into our contemporary life.
