International Icon Painting Exhibition

The Star of Bethlehem Icon exhibition will be shown at Pushkin House, London between Wednesday 14th December and 13th January. The exhibition and associated events have been organised by Irina Bradley, a Prosopon master icon painter who teaches at The Prince's School. Iconographers from five countries are taking part in the exhibition. Associated events present the opportunity to learn more about iconography. A part of the programme Irina Bradley will give a lecture entitled "Symbolic Language of Icons".The "Creating an Icon" workshop will provide a rare opportunity to see a a master and students creating icons using a traditional method. Traditionally iconographers use natural materials, such as gessoed wooden panels, egg tempera, earth and mineral pigments, including some rare minerals, such as lapis, malachite, azurite and cinnabar, genuine gold leaf and linseed oil varnish. The Prosopon School of Iconology was founded approximately 16 years ago by Vladislav Andrejev, a Russian-born iconographer. The school has branches in Estonia, Russia and USA. The Prosopon School received the blessing of the Archbishop of New York and New Jersey, Metropolitan of all America and Canada in 2000. The icons are written in accordance with iconographic canons and principles, where inner contemplation is integrated in the process of icon painting. Much attention is dedicated to the study of the theological and philosophical aspects of icon painting and interpretation. For information on opening times and location visit the Pushkin House website.
