About

Developing students skills in tapestry weaving, this course covers a wide range of techniques, starting with a demonstration of the warping-up process, followed by weaving samples of different techniques and ending with how to finish your tapestry sample for hanging.

Taking our designs from the stunning Valois tapestries woven in the mid 1500’s students will learn traditional methods from plain weaving to diagonals, stripes, and hatching. Students can expect to complete several woven samples over the duration of the course.

Throughout the workshop, there will be reference materials available to further enhance understanding and deepen students knowledge of hand woven weft faced tapestry.

Tutor Biography

Margaret Jones

Born in 1960, Margaret pursued tapestry weaving later in life when, in 2012, she embarked on a three-year full-time study to refine her Fine Art, creative, and craft skills, earning an MFA in Tapestry Weaving by 2015. Her work received numerous accolades during this time and despite being a somewhat more mature student and artist, Margaret holds no regrets as her age brings a maturity and perspective to her work that would not have been possible earlier. She now regularly conducts workshops at various venues across the UK for both beginners and advanced students. As a highly motivated artist and curator, Margaret continues to showcase her work internationally and curate exhibitions in the UK. Every two years, she organises 'Heallreaf', an exhibition touring through multiple venues in England with support from the Arts Council. This ambitious exhibition aims to challenge the perception of tapestry weaving as simply "woolly painting" and bring it back to its roots as a form of Fine Art that requires exceptional technical skill.
